Homework Tips for Children!

Homework is important to help you remember your learning and have a skills work-out! Here are a few tips to making homework a success:

1. Do your homework on the night you receive it - then you won't risk forgetting about it! 
2. Make sure you understand what you are being asked to do. If you are not sure, take it back to school to ask your teacher for more advice.
3. Check that you have all the equipment that you need at your table before you start.
4. Try to have the room as quiet as possible so that you can really concentrate.
5. Do your own work so that your teacher can see how confident you are. If someone helps you, that's great! Just pop a note into your homework book to let your teacher know.
6. If you are still unsure after some help from an adult, take it back to discuss with your teacher...they will be happy to help!
7. Celebrate with an adult! Once you have finished your homework, show off your amazing efforts to others - it will feel great!

Learning Your Times Tables!

One piece of regular homework that you receive will be times tables. These are SO important to learn because they will help you with every single area of your maths. The year group targets for times tables are below however it's always best to try and get ahead if you can! 

Year 2: 2, 5 and 10 times tables

Year 3: 3, 4 and 8 times tables

Year 4: all the rest - 6, 7, 9, 11 and 12 times tables

Here are some tips if you are finding them tricky to remember:

1. Use Times Table RockStars to help - https://play.ttrockstars.com/auth
2. Keep saying them in order and then backwards as quickly as you can - this will speed up your recall
3. Write all the answers to your target times table on a piece of A4. Ask an adult to call out a question e.g. 3 x 4 and see how quickly you can splat the correct answer with your finger. Shouting "Splat!" really loudly is fun! How many questions can you complete in a minute? Can you beat your own score or challenge an adult to try?
4. Ask an adult to write the answers down to your times table but miss one out. How quickly can you spot which number is missing?
5. If you are stuck on a question, try reversing it! For example, if you don't know 3 x 7, you might be able to remember 7 x 3. This will give you exactly the same answer!

Super Spellings

Learning your spellings is really helpful. Not only does it make your writing easy to read but it also shows that you understand some common spelling patterns. Here are a few helpful hints:

1. Try reading the word, covering it up, writing it down and then checking to see if you were right.
2. Make up a fun rhyme to help you remember tricky words, for example 'because' can be remembered by 'Big Elephants Can Always Understand Small Elephants.'
3. Break the word down into syllables, learning it in smaller 'chunks'. One example, relation can be remembered using re-la-tion.
4. Say the word exactly as it is spelt to help remember any silent letters or tricky parts.
5. Some children learn better by being more active. If this is you, try writing the words in sand, painting them onto paper or chalking them onto a surface - you'll need permission from an adult first for this one though!
6. If you feel that your spellings are too hard or easy, have a chat with your teacher - there may be a good reason why you have been given them or they might decide to change them!
