LEARNING

TOPIC

Our new topic is called ‘Fire! Fire!’ with our two main themes being ‘the great fire of London’ and ‘dragons’.

Our work in English will begin with information texts, based on the great fire of London.  We will then be reading lots of fantasy dragon stories, and will be using our imaginations to invent our own dragons.  We will continue to do class guided reading sessions and daily handwriting and phonics/ spelling sessions.

In Maths, we are beginning with some work on place value, followed by measuring length, multiplication/ division and telling the time.   Each week we will also do some work on addition and subtraction to ensure the children are really confident with these key concepts.

When we work on telling the time, the children will begin by reading a clock to the nearest hour and half hour, before moving on (if ready) to quarter past/ to and then 5 minute intervals.  The children do tend to find clocks quite tricky to master, so it would be great if you could point out the clock as part of daily routines at home too - e.g. “You can go on your tablet at 4 o’clock”!  There are lots of games here too:

What else are we covering this half term?

Science: ‘hands-on’ investigations, plus recording information in pictograms and block graphs

Computing: data handling

History: learning about ‘the great fire of London’.  This is a fun website:  https://www.fireoflondon.org.uk/game/

Art: a focus on painting – colour mixing including primary and secondary colours, and adding black and white to create tints and tones

Music: tuned percussion, pitch and rhythm. We’ll be having fun with ‘Dragons Love Tacos’ -you can find the song here: https://www.nbp.org/ic/nbp/programs/gep/dragon/ge_dragonsong.html

PSHE: ‘Keeping Safe’ unit

RE: ‘Questions, Questions’ unit including ‘Philosophy For Children’

PE: We will complete our work on dance and gymnastics before moving on to games skills

PE

Class 1/2 PE days are Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Children will come to school in their PE kit on these days.

  • PE shorts or plain joggers/ leggings
  • PE T-shirt
  • School jumper/ cardigan
  • Trainers that the child can fasten independently, or they can  wear their school shoes and change into their plimsolls for the PE lesson
  • Long hair will need to be tied up on PE days, and earrings removed

HOMEWORK

READING

On Fridays, the children will bring home several reading books, to read to you at home each day.  Your support with this is invaluable. I would suggest 5-10 minutes daily would be ideal, which may only be a few pages of the book. Please make a note in the planner to let us know which books/ pages have been read.  The children should bring their planners and books back on Fridays.  If they have finished their books at home, they will be able to change them for new ones.  The children have a separate reading book and record which we use when they read with us in school.

PHONICS HOMEWORK

This will be set each week, linked to work carried out in phonics/ spelling sessions.  Homework will be collected in on Fridays and new homework sent home.

MATHS

The children have individual logins for Numbots and Sumdog, which helps them to become fluent with counting and number facts.  Year 2 children also have access to T T Rockstars to work on their times tables.
