LEARNING

EYFS staff have developed a long-term plan to plan for key experiences over the academic year and to provide inspiration for learning, whilst providing the flexibility for children to follow their own interests and ideas. Children learn through a balance of child-initiated and adult-directed activities.

The timetable is carefully structured so that children have some sessions of direct teaching during the day. The timetable changes throughout the year to take into consideration the changing needs of the children. The direct teaching sessions are sometimes followed by small, focused group work. This allows adults to systematically check for understanding, identify and respond to misconceptions quickly and provide real-time verbal feedback, which results in a strong impact on the acquisition of new learning.

An important part of our direct teaching is our daily 'morning meetings'. These are completed in small groups to strongly support the children's communication and language through high-quality interactions and dialogue.

Most importantly, we know that children learn best through play. When children are deeply engaged, their brains are developing, new synapses are forming, and they are making progress.

READING

We seek to create a rich reading culture by sharing at least two high-quality picture books with children every day. We operate our class library where children can borrow picture books to read at home, and we share songs and poems each week to enhance children's understanding of words and extend their vocabulary. Running alongside this, we teach children to decode words by teaching systematic synthetic phonics. This means that the children are systematically taught to recognise the alphabet letter shapes and to link them with the sounds they make during daily phonic lessons.

To learn more about how we teach phonics, please come along to our phonics evening which is held each September.

We invite parents and carers to a phonics information evening during the autumn term. This takes place in the hall on the Lower School site and will last about an hour. We explain how your child is taught to read and how you can support them at home. Parental support is crucial to help children become good readers so I hope you will all come along and learn more about the process.

We follow a phonics scheme of work called 'Little Wandle'.

The phonics lessons are linked to Big Cat Collins reading books. When your child is starting to blend letter sounds to read we will send home some reading books.

Here is a summary of the books that we will be sending home:

  1.  Big Cat Collins book -This book has been carefully matched to your child’s current reading level based on most recent assessments. Your child should be able to read this fluently and independently. If your child is reading it with little help, please don’t worry that it’s too easy – your child needs to develop fluency and confidence in reading. Listen to them read the book. Remember to give them lots of praise – celebrate their success! If they can’t read a word, read it to them. After they have finished, talk about the book together.
  2. Choice books - are from our class library and are for you and your child to read and enjoy together - your child will not be able to read these on their own. To encourage your child to become a lifelong reader, it is important that they learn to read for pleasure. The sharing book is a book they have chosen for you to enjoy together. Read it to or with them, discuss the pictures, enjoy the story, predict what might happen next, use different voices for the characters or explore the facts in a non-fiction book. The main thing is that you have fun!
  3. Top-up books - carefully selected reading books that are matched to your child’s reading ability based on their most recent phonics assessment. This is for your child to read to you and to practice their reading.

MATHS

As a school we follow the White Rose Maths scheme https:// whiterosemaths.com/for-parents/

We use approaches from the National Centre of Excellence in the teaching of Mathematics to plan and deliver lessons.

We teach a maths lesson every day and plan practical maths activities for the children throughout the day that are matched to the children’s abilities based on our recent assessments. This term we are focussing on understanding the children's starting points and giving them an in-depth knowledge of numbers up to 5. We have been:

  • Counting
  • Matching
  • Sorting
  • Recognising numbers
  • Comparing numbers

CLASS ESSENTIALS

We ask that children bring indoor and outdoor shoes to use in school. In summer this can be plimsolls for inside and school shoes for outdoors, and in winter wellington boots for outside and school shoes/plimsolls for indoors. Please make sure your child has both, especially in the wet weather. Also, please ensure you send your child with a named hat in the good weather, as we do play outside a lot.

Please send your child with a named water bottle; these will be sent home on Fridays. This should only have water in it please, as we are a healthy school.

You are also welcome to send your child in with a healthy snack but we do kindly request that these are nut-free.

Please also make sure ALL your child’s belongings are labelled, as you can imagine a jumper/cardigan with no name and our large class is very tricky to find the correct home.

CLASS WEB LINKS

(Clicking on the image or logo below will take you to the relevant website)

We use an electronic learning journey, called Tapestry. Once your child has spent a few weeks in the setting we invite you to join the site online so that you can have and contribute to your child's learning journey. Through this secure site, you we will be able to see all the exciting things your child has been doing while in school.

Our school is on Twitter

@stamfordbps and Reception class also has our own Twitter page @sbps_eyfs. We will be posting out weekly updates of what we get up to. You don't need a Twitter account to view this, the links below will take you to each page:
