LEARNING

In early years we use play to develop children’s learning.

As well as supporting children's play, we also have:

  • Phonics - daily sessions
  • Maths - daily sessions

READING

Here is a summary of the books that we will be sending home:

  1. EBooks – will be issued via our eLibrary. Please look out for your child’s login details which will be sent home via book bags. This book will be at the correct phonic stage for your child - this book has been carefully matched to your child’s current reading level based on most recent assessments. Your child should be able to read this fluently and independently. If your child is reading it with little help, please don’t worry that it’s too easy – your child needs to develop fluency and confidence in reading. Listen to them read the book. Remember to give them lots of praise – celebrate their success! If they can’t read a word, read it to them. After they have finished, talk about the book together.
  2. Choice books - are for you and your child to read and enjoy together - your child will not be able to read this on their own. To encourage your child to become a lifelong reader, it is important that they learn to read for pleasure. The sharing book is a book they have chosen for you to enjoy together. Read it to or with them, discuss the pictures, enjoy the story, predict what might happen next, use different voices for the characters or explore the facts in a non-fiction book. The main thing is that you have fun!
  3. Top-up books - carefully selected reading book that is matched to your child’s reading ability based on their most recent phonics assessment. This is for your child to read to you and to practice their reading.

MATHS

As a school we follow the White Rose Maths scheme https:// whiterosemaths.com/for-parents/

We use approaches from the National Centre of Excellence in the teaching of Mathematics to plan and deliver lessons.

We teach a maths lesson every day and plan practical maths activities for the children throughout the day that are matched to the children’s abilities based on our recent assessments. This term we have been focussing on giving children an in-depth knowledge of numbers up to 10. We have been:

  • Counting
  • Comparing sets
  • Composing a number from smaller numbers
  • Looking for patterns
  • Learning about shapes
  • Measuring length and height.

CLASS ESSENTIALS

We ask that children bring indoor and outdoor shoes to use in school. In summer this can be plimsolls for inside and school shoes for outdoors, and in winter wellington boots for outside and school shoes/plimsolls for indoors. Please make sure your child has both, especially in the wet weather. Also, please ensure you send your child with a named hat in the good weather, as we do play outside a lot.

Please send your child with a named water bottle; these will be sent home on Fridays. This should only have water in it please, as we are a healthy school.

Please also make sure ALL your child’s belongings are labelled, as you can imagine a jumper/cardigan with no name and our large class is very tricky to find the correct home.

CLASS WEB LINKS

(Clicking on the image or logo below will take you to the relevant website)

We use an electronic learning journey, called Tapestry. Once your child has spent a few weeks in the setting we invite you to join the site online so that you can have and contribute to your child's learning journey. Through this secure site, you we will be able to see all the exciting things your child has been doing while in school.

Our school is on Twitter

@stamfordbps and Reception class also has our own Twitter page @sbps_eyfs. We will be posting out weekly updates of what we get up to. You don't need a Twitter account to view this, the links below will take you to each page:
